Special Needs and Counselling Department

Overview

The department was established more than 10 years ago in the school. It caters for all children with specific learning difficulties from Nursery to Secondary school. At the present moment, however, the emphasis has been on the younger children in the primary school section.

Staffing

Currently, a qualified member of staff who supervises a number of helpers attached to the department runs the department. Plans are, however, underway to expand the department by way of recruiting more specialised teachers.

Services Offered

The department offers the following services:

1.   Assessment
The department assesses children referred by the teachers or parents for specific learning and
present comprehensive reports on each case.

2.   Providing Remedial Programmes
Every child assessed by the department and found with a specific need gets an Individualised
Education Programme (IEP) to address the problem. The Programme details the problem, the
objectives, what is to be done and the responsible adult who should be included in the remedial
      plan.

3.   Aptitude and Skills Based Testing
The department, on behalf of the school, carries out Aptitude Tests for Form 3 and Skills based
tests at Grade 3 and 6. The results of these tests are used as a tool for the teachers, a guide to the
school while providing an incentive to the pupils. At secondary school level, the results are also
used for career guidance beyond IGCSE.

4.   Psychological Counselling
The department provides psychological counselling to young people within the school.

General

The department has also been able to conduct workshops in areas of various psychological and special educational needs interest in the school. The department has also, on a number of occasions, rendered assessment services to non-Lechwe School children. This service is still available at a fee and can be arranged through the school.

To further encourage multi-sensory learning, the school has acquired multi-media computers that are actively used in remedial lessons. These have supplemented our already rich special needs resources, which are ordered from highly reputable sources in the U.K.
