EARLY EDUCATION YEARS
The Foundation Stage at Lechwe School
begins in the Nursery School and ends in the reception year.
Nursery
The Nursery section has three classes. These are Lower Nursery, Middle Nursery and Upper Nursery. This is housed in a
modern purpose built establishment. It is self-contained and equipped
with a wide variety of indoor and outdoor equipment for use by children
between the ages of two and a half and four.
Each age group is catered for by a teacher and teacher aide. Small
classes enable individual needs of each child to be met.
Assessments are carried out termly to determine the progress of each
child and a report is issued at the end of the nursery phase. Parent,
teacher interviews take place termly.
Specialist subjects include:
Music
Swimming
Physical Education
Art
The Reception Year
The last stage of the Foundation Stage is
catered for in the Reception Year. Each class is well equipped and
supervised by a Teacher and a Teacher Aide. Children are exposed to a
more structured routine in order to ensure a smooth transition to
Year One. The Literacy and Numeracy Strategies as set down by the
National Curriculum are followed.
IT is offered as an additional subject and children are
involved in school events such as Assemblies, Concerts and Art
competitions.
Curriculum Areas
In line with the Foundation Stage these are organised into the following
areas:
- Personal, social and
emotional development
- Communication, language and
literacy
- Mathematical development
- Knowledge and understanding
of the world
- Physical development
- Creative development
Physiology
We believe in a child-centred educational policy where the child
takes control of his/her learning. This develops the
potential of each child and includes the involvement of parents in the
education of their children to enhance the quality of education
We
understand that: each child develops at his or her own
individual rate.
Our role as educators is to:
Provide the type of environment that will help your
child to learn and develop the necessary skills to cope with life and to
lay a solid foundation on which all further learning can take place.
Key
Stage One (Age
5 – 7 years)Grades One and Grade Two
Children aged 5 – 7 years (approximately) are educated in large airy
classrooms and they also have their own play area with a variety of play
equipment. Small classes allow time for individual attention.
Our teaching approach is thorough, caring and informal, yet emphasis is
placed on high standards of literacy and numeracy developed through
creative and practical work. A smooth transition into the more demanding
curriculum of the key stage two level is promoted.
Key Stage Two (Age 7 – 11+ years)Grade Three to
Grade Six
Each class has a teacher who is responsible for the pastoral care of the
children and the greater part of the curriculum of the grade.
Homework is given regularly to supplement and consolidate lessons taught
in the classrooms. Parents are requested to ensure that homework is
completed and signed.
Our target is for all Grade Six pupils to achieve Level four before
proceeding to Key Stage Three in the Secondary School. Liaison takes
place between the Primary and Secondary Departments to prevent a loss of
momentum in pupils' progress between the end of Key Stage Two and the
beginning of Key Stage Three. Continuity in the curriculum and a smooth
transfer are considered essential. |
